What Should a Cleaner Do in 3 Hours?

A Guide to Effective Cleaning for Cleaners in Sydney, Perth or the Gold Coast

When hiring a cleaner for a specific timeframe, like three hours, it’s important to understand what you can reasonably expect from that time.  In our experience we see a lot of people will over-estimate how quickly a home can be cleaned.  Whilst a well-organised cleaner can accomplish a lot in just a few hours, transforming your space into a tidy haven, there’s a bit of a formula to it also which we use in our quoting process.

So we asked our QA Managers in Sydney as to what they would expect that a cleaner should be doing in three hours and here’s some guidelines that they came back with:

Prioritising the Space

Before your cleaner arrives, it’s helpful to prioritise which areas of your home or office need the most attention. This ensures that the time is spent effectively. Here’s a breakdown of what can typically be accomplished in three hours:

1. Living Areas (~ 45 to 60 minutes)

Key Tasks:

  • Dusting Surfaces: Wipe down shelves, furniture, and decorative items to remove dust and allergens.
  • Vacuuming/Sweeping: Thoroughly vacuum carpets and rugs and mop hard floors.
  • Couch and Cushion Care: Plump up cushions, brush upholstery, and remove any stray items or clutter.
  • Organising: Tidy up any clutter and return items to their designated places.

2. Kitchen (~45 to 60 minutes)

Key Tasks:

  • Wiping Down Surfaces: Clean countertops and the outside of appliances. Wash dishes or place in dishwasher
  • Clean Cooking Areas: clean stove or hotplates, splashbacks and rangehood.
  • Cleaning the Sink: Scrub the sink and polish fixtures, removing any stains or food debris.
  • Emptying the Bin: Dispose of rubbish and replace the bin liner.
  • Floors: Sweep and mop the kitchen floor to ensure it’s spotless.
  • Additional Tasks: Spot clean cupboard faces, wipe and buff front of oven, and the inside of the microwave.

3. Bathrooms (~45 minutes per bathroom)

Key Tasks:

  • Cleaning and Sanitising Fixtures: Clean toilets, sinks, showers, and bathtubs using disinfectants to eliminate germs. Scrub grout in tiled areas.
  • Wiping Down Surfaces: Clean mirrors, counters, and any surfaces that collect grime.
  • Floor Cleaning: Sweep and mop or vacuum the bathroom floors.
  • Restocking Supplies: Check and restock toilet paper, soap, and towels if necessary.

4. Bedrooms (~20 – 30 minutes per bedroom)

Key Tasks:

  • Dusting Surfaces: Wipe down shelves, furniture, and decorative items to remove dust and allergens.
  • Vacuuming/Sweeping: Thoroughly vacuum carpets and rugs and mop hard floors.
  • Tidy Up & Present Room: Plump up cushions and pillows and position on bed or chair/s, smooth out bedsheets and doona covers.
  • Organising: Tidy up any clutter and return items to their designated places.
  • Additional extras:  Make bed/s with clean linen.
