We recently asked our inhouse Personal Home Organiser, Alessandra, where is the best place to start when we organise a home. Her suggestion was to start with the kitchen because that’s the heart of the home. And more specifically, to start with the pantry!
So, here’s why organising your pantry will change your life!
- You’ll make use of all that valuable space
I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who thinks their kitchen is big enough! But as Manhattan Maids Personal Home Organiser, Alessandra, tells us, it’s not about having a bigger kitchen with more storage, it’s all about optimising what we already have. Organising your pantry to its full potential will help free up space and keep your counter clutter-free.
It’s easier than you think to get started. All you have to do is empty your pantry, measure the height and width of your shelves and make a list of the items you use most often. Once you have the right organisers, bins and baskets in place, your entire pantry will be personalized based on your family’s needs.
TIP #1: Use space-saving solutions like turntables or tiered shelves. The Lazy Susan is not just for the local Chinese restaurant. You can get very stylish turntables and tiered shelves to make it easy to find and locate items in your pantry.
- You’ll maximise the amount of space in your kitchen.
When you take the time to organise your pantry, you create more usable space. With more space in your pantry, you can remove excess items that have been stuffed in your cabinets and crowding your countertops. Reducing this clutter will make your kitchen feel larger, cleaner, and more enjoyable to use and be in.
- You’ll quickly and easily find what you need.
No more rifling through pantry shelves and kitchen cabinets to find what you need. Having a system in your pantry will help you with meal preparation, cooking, and even cleaning, freeing up more of your time to do the things you love and attend to other responsibilities.
- You’ll end up saving money on groceries
Organising your pantry makes it easy to see what you do and don’t have so that you’re not buying more than you need because you forgot you already had it at home. You can easily keep track of expiration dates to be sure you’re not wasting anything you’ve already purchased.
TIP #2: Keep a running grocery list in your pantry. One of the best organising tips is to have a magnetic whiteboard inside your pantry door, or on your fridge. When you run out of something, write it up on the board. When it comes to doing your shopping, simply take a photo on your phone and you have a instant shopping list!
- Eliminate pantry moths for good
By storing your pantry items in good quality sealed containers, you immediately eliminate the breeding ground of pantry moths. They are attracted to scents like packaging glue and thrive in cardboard packets – like the ones that cereals come in!
TIP #3: Use labels to keep track of expiry dates and products. Labels make it easy to clear out old items that have expired and prioritise ingredients that you gravitate towards.
TIP #4: Put a couple of Bay Leaves on each shelf to keep moths away – they hate the smell!
- You’ll be inspired to cook more!
It’s so much easier to keep surfaces clean when everything is organised neatly in the pantry and cupboards. Counter tops are then left clutter free so all you do is wipe and clean!
TIP #5: Canisters are the solution. Canisters are the perfect way to organise your pantry as they create structure and make it easy to find what you’re looking for. And they can look fabulous!
- You’ll be inspired to cook more!
Knowing what’s in the pantry makes it so much easier to mix and match ingredients and spark that creative cooking flair!
TIP #6: Organize your cabinets according to what you gravitate towards. Having your go-to ingredients easily accessible will save you time and give you an extra push to cook more.
